Folk Media for Issue-Based Science Communication in Rural Communities

Cluster Development for SC Livelihood Improvement through Floricultural Practices
In rural communities, traditions often hold sway, particularly among older generations. Recognizing a critical gap in scientific understanding that hindered progress on issues like health and sanitation, Shanti Sewa Samiti developed innovative non-formal education programs. Captivating puppet shows and folk media presentations became powerful tools to bridge the knowledge gap. These programs tackled crucial issues like maintaining a healthy environment, promoting proper hygiene practices, ensuring balanced nutrition, and highlighting the negative consequences of child marriage. Shanti Sewa Samiti's goal is not just to inform, but to empower. By fostering scientific literacy, they equip the community to make informed decisions that promote a healthier and more fulfilling future.
In Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, many from the marginalized Schedule Caste (SC) community work the land, facing limited income, land ownership, and access to basic necessities. Struggling to break the cycle of poverty, this community often lacks the resources for a brighter future. Our project aimed to empower them. We trained them in cultivating high-value flowers like Dahlia and Gladiolus, using advanced horticultural practices. This training extended beyond cultivation to include harvesting and market access through a cooperative model, ensuring sustainable income generation and efficient resource utilization. By equipping them with advanced agricultural knowledge and cooperative strategies, we strived for a more equitable and prosperous future for these marginalized groups.
